Be Aware of NY Agriculture WebQuest, Grade 3
Milk comes from cows located on farms all across the United States. In New York State, milk is our top agricultural product. It is usually produced on family farms that look a lot like this picture. The farms range in size from very small to very big. Smaller farms have less than 100 cows, while larger ones can have more than 1,000 cows! The most common breed of cow is the Holstein (the kind of cows in this picture). Because adult cows weigh over 1,000 pounds, they eat nearly 100 pounds of food a day. They convert this food into about 100 glasses of milk a day! How many pound of food do you think you eat in one day?
