Special Garden Features:
Bennett Park is a Kids Growing Food school that had a large existing garden. They were the kickoff site for the September Activ8Kids Healthy Living Event and bike ride across the state. The school is involved in a curriculum-integrated school garden project — to promote health, environmental stewardship and community building through food production, processing, and consumption — called M.O.L.E. (Montessori Outdoor Learning Experience). They are also partnering in a project funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation called "Healthy Eating by Design." Other partners include the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, University of Buffalo Dept. of Urban and Regional Planning, the Massachusetts Avenue Project, Native Offerings Farm, Urb Gardens, and the Buffalo Public Schools Food Services Department. "Healthy Eating by Design" components include: Farm-to-Cafeteria program (free salad bar in cafeteria featuring local and school grown produce), afterschool gardening program, health education in the classroom, art and health (mural painting), celebration of food and family (weekly community dinners), active living by design (a student-designed 'healthwalk' to promote walking to school).
