New York Agriculture in the Classroom
Less than 2% of our population actually produces food on farms, while over 20% of our nation's workforce is in some way, shape, or form involved in the processing, marketing, distribution, and sales of food and fiber products. And yet, little is taught in our schools about agriculture and the total food and fiber system. One of New York Ag in the Classroom's (NYAITC) objectives is to fill this void.
Established in 1985 as a partnership between Cornell University, the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets, the NYS Education Department, and the New York Farm Bureau, NY AITC educates youth, teachers, and consumers about agriculture and the food and fiber system.
NY AITC envisions a day when individuals in the state of New York:
- Appreciate the economic, social, historical, and scientific importance of agriculture in our society.
Develop an accurate picture of today's agriculture
- Explore the many career opportunities in all areas of agriculture
- Recognize the connection between agricultural production and the daily consumption of food and fiber products
